Foxfeather

Foxfeather is a sultry, alt-americana band founded in 2013 in Boulder, CO. Beginning with a lyrical base, and bolstered by strong blues-rock instrumentals, Foxfeather’s unique sound captivates their audience. Songwriters Carly Ricks Smith and Laura Paige Stratton met in high school, connecting over their shared love of music. The pair began writing together in 2005 and have been creating material for, and leading their band for the past 7 years. Foxfeather is extremely proud of being an advocate of women in art and in business, and strives to motivate and empower other women and allies through song. The band is a local staple in the Colorado Front Range and also tours nationally. In the last several years, Foxfeather has captured their audience with their unique and sultry songs, sharing stages with The Gasoline Lollipops, Lee Fields and the Expressions, Yonder Mountain String Band, Woodbelly and Andrew Bird. Their songwriting and performance is influenced by a wide variety of artists including Brandi Carlile, Bonnie Raitt, Margaret Glaspy, Ani Difranco, and Stevie Nicks. The band’s current lineup includes Carly Ricks Smith (lead vocals, writer/composer) Laura Paige Stratton (guitar, keyboard, writer/composer), Blake Smith (lead guitar), Mark Dabrowski (bass guitar), and Jay Elliott (drums and percussion). The group is proud to utilize their voice to embolden and rejoice in both the frailty and the power of humanity. With expressive instrumental tone, powerful vocal melody and harmony, and passionate performance, this band is ready to win your hearts.

“If you are looking to be blown away by raw talent, then look no further than Griffin House.” —American Songwriter

Griffin House’s new record “Stories for a Rainy Day” is a collection of 9 songs written during the pandemic and recorded in just 3 days, and is being described as his most happy and upbeat yet.  The opening track “The Mississippi Hippie” was originally written for a feature in Esquire magazine called “Somewhere in Mississippi” and was rediscovered and resurrected for for “Stories for a Rainy Day.”  The album was recorded by Tim Pannella using a stripped down trio set up with Jersey based musicians Eric Novod on drums, Mark Masefield on keys, and House on guitars and vocals.  With minimal production and the band playing together as opposed to overdubbing, the songs have a space to be more playful, free and alive.

A concept record, with each song telling a story, an idea inspired from one of House’s favorite childhood albums “Ten Summoner’s Tales,” the final tale features the hilarious character “Guido” is the only song on the album that was recorded live in concert.

“Stories for a Rainy Day” was released on Valentine’s Day 2022 and features the artwork of Scottsdale based painter Priscilla Nelson.

Bonnie and Taylor Sims:

Platinum recording artists Bonnie & Taylor are one of Colorado’s most powerful and dynamic musical duos. From the soul shaking harmonies and masterful songwriting to the endearing onstage moments, Bonnie & Taylor have captivated audiences all across the world. From their most recent global success I See Red tallying over 150 million streams and a deal with Columbia Records to playing countless live shows and festivals around CO and the Western US; tours to Germany, Canada and Sweden; multiple studio albums; exciting collaborations with other area musicians and hundreds of students through summer camps and private lessons Bonnie & Taylor have established themselves as a potent creative force of the vibrant Colorado music scene.

Sturtz:

Sturtz’s music stands out for its distinctive, soothing instrumental and vocal harmonies. The acoustic quartet – Andrew Sturtz [vocals, guitar], Jim Herlihy [banjo], Courtlyn Carpenter [cello], and Will Kuepper [bass]- falls somewhere at the intersection of folk and soul, with lead singer Andrew Sturtz’s melodic vocals soaring over the lower string instrumentals. Sturtz is based in Boulder, CO, and has toured across the U.S. opening for groups like the Eli Young Band, Trout Steak Revival, Lillie Mae, and Smooth Hound Smith. NPR’s All Songs Considered described the band as “a reassuring breath of fresh air that pulls me back to simpler times” in their April 2020 blog. Sturtz released their debut album You’ve Done this Before in August 2021, and now they are hard at work touring on this album and writing songs for their next album. When the members of Sturtz aren’t playing music, you’ll probably find them milling flour, farming, laying in a creek, or eating native foliage.

Blue Canyon Boys

The Blue Canyon Boys are equal parts purists and innovators when it comes to Bluegrass: they stay true to the form’s roots while constantly reimagining their relationship to tradition. The result is a toe-tapping mix of haunting standards, genre-bending arrangements, and catchy original numbers—all built on the bedrock of their collective bluegrass mastery.

Ever since founding members Jason Hicks and Gary Dark launched the Blue Canyon Boys in 2006, the Blue Canyon Boys have raised the bar for bluegrass bands. They bring it all:  seamless brother-duet style, crisp instrumentation, unvarnished lyrics and subversive humor. After winning first place 2008 Telluride Bluegrass festival band contest, the Blue Canyon Boys went off at full tilt, taking the bluegrass circuit by storm, performing in illustrious venues across the country as well as internationally.

Their distinctive sound, honed from over a decade of performing together, moves easily from instrumental wizardry to playful ribbing. Ultimately and repeatedly, they hit a high note—the rare confluence of harmony that leaves the soul ajar.

The seasoned quartet features Gary Dark on mandolin, Jason Hicks on guitar, Drew Garrett on bass, and Chris Roszell on banjo. Their latest album, aptly titled “7”, is perhaps their most polished and poignant yet. Classic bluegrass, clean and raw, blends effortlessly with the band’s homegrown compositions, then peppered with a judicious cover or two, such as the band’s riveting take on Warren Zevon’s “Carmelita”.

Whether calling on their old timey musical roots or reconnoitering the future, the band’s musical prowess never wavers. This is high lonesome sound at its best: a driving pulse that weaves through harmonies and fierce rhythms, always with the reminder that as long as the music plays we are never quite alone.

Eddie Taylor: From Eldo To Everest

Eddie Taylor: From Eldo To Everest

On May 12th of 2022 Eddie Taylor joined six other climbers on the summit of Mount Everest for the first all Black ascent of the Nepalese mountain. Seven months earlier, Eddie climbed the Moonlight Buttress, a 5.12+ 1000’ sandstone wall in Zion National Park. These two ascents show the ability of Eddie to balance being a teacher, husband, soon-to-be father, and climber.

From crimping up Madagascar’s 2,000 foot granite big walls to kicking steps up South America’s tallest mountain Aconcagua to skiing North America’s tallest mountain Denali to climbing over 50 laps on Eldorado Canyon’s The Naked Edge (5.11c) , Eddie’s mountain adventures have been a vehicle for him to see the world and to gain both cultural and environmental perspective.

Coming from a demographic with the lowest graduation rate and highest incarceration rate, he has turned what traditionally has been seen as a barrier into success. Upon completing a double major and finishing his track and field career at the University of Colorado, Eddie went on to become a passionate rock climber, public school science teacher, head track and field coach and more recently Patagonia ambassador.

With 1% of the climbing community and 2% of educators being black, Eddie stood out. His experiences in the mountains and in the classroom taught him the need for change not only in the outdoors but in the world. Eddie hopes to share these stories, and create a heritage for his community that will hopefully fuel and inspire future generations.
