The 1928 film “The Trail of 98” captures and brings to life local Colorado history on the silver screen with remarkable visuals.
Partly filmed at Rollins Pass and other Colorado locations, as well as Alaska, this epic film follows fortune hunters from all over the country who rush into the Klondike in 1897 to seek their fortunes in gold, and are tested by many hardships along the way. Brothers from South Carolina, a husband escaping a shrewish wife in Michigan, a poor farmer from Kansas, weathered prospectors from Nevada and countless others head up the overland route to Dawson City. It is hazardous and arduous, with each person carrying 50 pound packs. The adversities are numerous: claim jumping, blizzards, swollen rushing rivers, fires, and a young woman’s honor (Dolores Del Rio) all lay between these travelers and their potential fortunes.
