When a couple of swindlers hold young Alice Faulkner against her will to recover potentially embarrassing letters, Sherlock Holmes is on the case and out to save the royal family’s reputation.

Long considered lost until a nitrate negative was identified in the vaults of La Cinémathèque Française, this William Gillette film is a vital missing link in the history of Sherlock Holmes on screen. Gillette is credited as the world’s foremost interpreter of Holmes on stage down to the detective’s famous deerstalker cap. This newly-restored edition, thanks to the monumental efforts of both the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and La Cinémathèque Française, represents the sole surviving appearance of Gillette’s Holmes on film.
