Sole heir Willie McKay (Buster Keaton) journeys by train from New York City to Kentucky to claim his fortune amid a decades-old feud with the Canfield family. Along the way, he meets the young beauty Virginia (Natalie Talmadge) and becomes instantly smitten. After accepting her invite to dinner, he realizes too late that she is the only daughter of patriarch Joseph Canfield (Joe Roberts). The rules of hospitality protect McKay from harm in their house, but he must outwit her brothers to resolve the feud before she follows through with her one vow: to kill every member of his family.”

Roscoe and Buster operate a combination garage and fire station. Their first mishap is destroying a car that was left for them to clean, followed by their second mishap of following a false fire alarm, only to return to their own building on fire.
