The film on which all subsequent musicals were based, “Chicago” (1927) recounts the true story of Beulah Annan, fictionalized as Roxie Hart, and her spectacular murder of her boyfriend.

Sexy, jazz-loving and dressed to kill, Roxie Hart has a doting, handsome husband and a gold-digging affair with Eugene, who eventually tires of Roxie’s demands for money and ends up paying with his life. Put on trial for murder, Roxie secures lawyer Billy Flynn who is equal parts mobster and publicity agent. As the press coverage of her trial goes to Roxie’s head, the courtroom theatrics begin. The ending is crueler to Roxie, in keeping with Hollywood values of not allowing criminals to profit too much from their crimes (although she does get away with murder). Produced by Cecil B. DeMille.

Running time: 119 minutes
