MEMBERSHIPNotice of Annual Meeting – July 22The Annual Meeting of the Colorado Chautauqua Association (CCA) will be held on Monday, July 22nd at 7:00 PM in the Grand Assembly of the Chautauqua Community House. All CCA members are invited to attend. Plus, Patty Limerick will be speaking on behalf of the Colorado Chautauqua. The Relevance of Chautauqua in Our Time The Chautauqua Movement was a social force in this country at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Activities focused on adult education through cultural programming, lectures on political reform, and entertainment for the whole community. The movement waned decades ago, and many chautauquas disappeared. But the Colorado Chautauqua has persisted, with a dynamic merging of tradition and innovation, through eras of major social, political, and cultural change. How might this institution draw on the ballast of its historical foundation to benefit Boulder, Colorado, and the nation today? How might we think about the future course of this National Historic Landmark by reckoning with the many meanings–not all of them entirely harmonized–of “preservation?” About the Speaker Patty Limerick is the Faculty Director and Chair of the Board of the Center of the American West at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she is also a Professor of History. Limerick has dedicated her career to demonstrating the benefits of applying historical perspective to contemporary dilemmas and conflicts. Her best-known work, The Legacy of Conquest, is an overview and reinterpretation of Western American history that has stirred up a great deal of both academic and public debate. She is a past recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship and a current member of the National Council on the Humanities. More information may be found here. For more information, click here.
