MUSIC

Dawn and Hawkes – October 7

The magic was there right from the start; long before they started co-writing or even fell in love. This indie folk, Americana duo met in Austin, Texas; each a solo artist carving out their own path. Hawkes, a recording producer and touring artist, while Dawn, a performing singer-songwriter, was hosting her own songwriter showcases. It was here the two first met and sang together kicking off a cross-country tour, co-writing, and even a run on NBC’s “The Voice.” Dawn and Hawkes recorded their new album, “Yours and Mine,” in between tour dates with the likes of Dawes, Patty Griffin, Chris Isaak, Robert Earl Keen, and at festivals like Austin City Limits, South by Southwest and TEDx. The songs are conceived in real-time while the couple’s relationship bloomed from friendship to lovers. The album is a celebration of life’s beautiful moments that make us want to take another breath and another step – despite uncertainty. Listen to their new single “Silver Line” here. Friday, October 7. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

Venus Cruz – October 21

You may remember Venus Cruz from her Chautauqua Auditorium performance when she opened for international jazz artist Gregory Porter. If you missed the soulful vocals of this local songbird, join us for her return to Chautauqua this month. Venus Cruz is the first lady of the Future Jazz Project, a collective of national and international jazz musicians. Together, they’ve opened for a wide range of artists, including The Roots, Black Thought, Goapele, Al Green and Guru, and Bishop Desmond Tutu. In 2012, Cruz won Westword’s Best R&B Vocalist Award. She is also the Host/DJ of the “Jazz Odyssey” radio show every Wednesday on KUVO.org 89.3FM. This intimate concert will feature Venus performing original compositions as well as modern takes on classic jazz standards. She will be joined by Mikey Smith (guitar) and Mark Emmons (percussion). Watch Cruz at the Oasis here. Friday, October 21. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

CHAUTAUQUA HISTORY

Heirloom Apples

Before it became the Texas-Colorado Chautauqua in 1898, the property overlooking Boulder was known as the Bachelder Ranch. The farming family grew fields of alfalfa and also tended an apple orchard. According to records at the Carnegie Branch Library for Local History, the ranch at the base of Green Mountain was built in 1882. Although altered from the original, the ranch house is the oldest structure at Chautauqua. It served as the first Chautauqua office and still stands today as Cottage 200.

Heirloom apple trees can still be found along Kinnikinic Road. Chautauquans shared their favorite recipes in “Chautauqua Porches: A Centennial Cookbook 1898-1998.” Here’s one for Green Apple Cake contributed by cottager Chester Weber.

Green Apple Cake:

2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon soda
2 eggs 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup oil 1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 cups flour 4 cups sliced or diced green apples

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together sugar, eggs and oil. Add flour, which has been combined with soda, cinnamon and salt. Add apples and nuts. Pour into a bundt pan which has been greased and floured. Bake for one hour.
