Nicholas Carr – November 5

Back by popular demand, Nicholas Carr presents his newly released book “The Glass Cage.” The book explores the impact of automation from a deeply human perspective, examining the personal as well as the economic consequences of our growing dependence on computers. Carr digs behind the headlines about factory robots and self-driving cars, wearable computers and digitized medicine, as he explores the hidden costs of granting software dominion over our work and our leisure. Even as they bring ease to our lives, these programs are stealing something essential from us.

Nicholas Carr is an acclaimed writer on technology and culture. His most recent book, “The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains,” was a finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction.

ACCESS & SAFETY PROJECTS

Vote Yes on 2A

Election Day is just around the corner and City of Boulder residents will notice Issue 2A on their ballots. If approved by the voters, 2A would increase City of Boulder sales tax by $.03 on each $10 purchase for three years to raise funds for important improvements to areas around the city. Chautauqua Park would receive up to $1.5 million for two long-desired improvements that provide for a safer, more pedestrian-friendly access to the magnificent outdoor and cultural facilities of our historic landmark and will benefit all visitors. These projects are:
•    Construction of a new sidewalk on the south side of Baseline and related improvements adjacent to Chautauqua Park
•    Pedestrian safety lighting for improved nighttime way finding on the sidewalks connecting the Chautauqua Auditorium and Baseline Road, and the Dining Hall and the lower tennis court parking lot.
No dollars would flow to the Colorado Chautauqua Association itself and the two projects would be completed by the City. West Garden Walk reconstruction underway

Reconstruction is currently underway of the connecting walk between the north side of the Community House and the rear of the Dining Hall. The project includes the installation of a wider, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant walkway. Materials from the existing walkway will be repurposed in other projects throughout the park. This area is currently closed to foot traffic for approximately four weeks. All guests are advised to use the east sidewalks to access the Dining Hall. Thank you for your cooperation.
