DOCUMENTARY FILM

Evil Cheesey Rides Again – November 17

Join us for the world premiere of “Evil Cheesey Rides Again” and hear the story of one of Boulder’s most colorful characters from the mid-1970s. Terry Chesebro, better known as Evil Cheesey, notoriously took to the streets to perform illegal jumps on his motorcycle. One day, the beloved stunt-cyclist disappeared out of people’s hearts, into the bars and onto the streets. Drawn to his rebellious personality, directors Chris Leising and Jack Hanley set out to capture his return to the bike, but instead, they documented his final days. Watch the official trailer here. Directors Chris Leising and Jack Hanley will lead a post-screening discussion. Tickets are almost gone! Purchase today before they sell out! Thursday, November 17. 7:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

CHAUTAUQUA HISTORY

Long before Oprah’s Book Club, the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle

The Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (CLSC) began in 1878. The thirst for knowledge by participants at the first New York Chautauqua Assembly in 1874 inspired the founders to create a reading correspondence course. A mail order program, the studies were a combination of reading materials on your own time and then participating in group discussions with other community members enrolled in the program. The book club caught on and soon there were thousands of CLSC reading circles across America. Individuals held meetings with other CLSC readers in their kitchens and living rooms. Designed as a 4-year course, certificates were awarded upon completion of the requirements.

When the Texas-Colorado Chautauqua opened in 1898, the CLSC already had a following in Colorado and Texas, according to Mary Galey’s book, “The Grand Assembly.” CLSC meetings were held in the Women’s Headquarters tent.

A few of the titles from the 1898 CLSC reading list are “The Social Spirit in America,” “From Chaucer to Tennyson” and “Walks and Talks in the Geological Field.” The program lives on at Chautauqua Institution in New York and here at the Colorado Chautauqua with its annual Author Series, kicking off November 16 with Christine Goff. CITY PROJECTS AT CHAUTAUQUA

Construction is currently underway for the Chautauqua Pedestrian Safety Access and Lighting Improvements Project, part of the 2014 voter-approved Community, Culture and Safety Tax ballot initiative. This six-month-long project will address the safety hazard caused by the lack of sidewalk on a section of the south side of Baseline Road, and will improve visitor and area resident mobility and accessibility to Chautauqua.
