Invaders from Planet 9 – September 29 – October 28

Prepare yourself for a fun, lively tale of adventure and extraterrestrials. Join a group of college students who find themselves in the middle of an alien invasion. Can these unlikely heroes work together to save the day? Or will our planet be lost to these ruthless invaders? Paying homage to classic science fiction stories from the 1950s, this tale is sure to make you scream and laugh in equal measure. Brace yourself for adventure and fantastic terrors like you’ve never seen before. Buy early! Each hike is capped at low numbers and tends to sell out in advance. Recommended for ages six (6) and older. Presented by Arts in the Open. Weekends, September 29 – October 28. Chautauqua Picnic Shelter. Buy tickets online.

Your Life, Your Legacy – October 8

Most people make financial plans for the future—planning college funds, vacation, retirement, healthcare—but very few like to think about death, let alone plan for it. Join Matt Fox, general manager of Crist Mortuary & Mountain View Memorial Park, for an afternoon conversation on the value of pre-arranging your final wishes as a gift to surviving family members. Monday, October 8. 2:00 – 3:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House, Meadows Room. FREE event. Coffee and cookies will be served. Click here to RSVP.

Helen Thorpe: The Newcomers – October 9

From award-winning, “meticulously observant” writer Helen Thorpe comes a powerful and moving account of how refugee teenagers at a Denver public high school learn English and become Americans, in the care of a compassionate teacher. Unfamiliar with American culture, their stories are poignant and remarkable as they face the enormous challenge of adapting. Read a recent book review by USA Today here. Tuesday, October 9. 7:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

Dawn & Hawkes – October 12

“Naturally drawn to each other, the Austin based indie-folk-Americana duo performs with an unmatched chemistry apparent throughout the interplay of their onstage personas as well as their intricate harmonies,” Steamboat Today says of Dawn and Hawkes. Join this dynamic pair as they return to the stage to kick off our Community House Concert Series. Watch the video for “Yours and Mine” here. Friday, October 12. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Community House.
