HISTORY

Picnics at Chautauqua

Even before the founding of the Colorado Chautauqua in 1898, people came to picnic in Bluebell Canyon and on the meadows in front of the Flatirons. During Chautauqua’s first season, the Dining Hall staff served formal outdoor meals they called picnics.

The November 1920 Colorado Chautauqua Bulletin featured an article in which a picnicker from the plains stated, “I had no idea there was such a beautiful spot in all the world. I felt sure I must be in some sort of dreamland.” The June 1921 Bulletin featured an abundance of picnicking articles – one even named “Beefsteak Fries under Colorado Skies”. To this day, picnickers are often found enjoying themselves on the Chautauqua grounds.
