CHAUTAUQUA HISTORY
Chautauqua cookbooks

The first Chautauqua cookbook appeared in 1969. Published in a spiral-bound format by Johnson Printing Company, the cookbook sold for $3.50.
The Cookbook Committee, chaired by Enola McNamara, spent two years compiling recipes shared by summer residents for 70 years. A short history of Chautauqua, a poem by Alexine Crawford Howell and helpful, entertaining tips were also included in the book.

A new cookbook, overseen by Sara Carlson, was published for the 1998 Chautauqua Centennial. “Chautauqua Porches: A Centennial Cookbook” was twice as long as its predecessor, and included a new poem by Alexine Crawford Howell, line drawings by Aprylisa Snyder and cover decorations by Lillian Kennedy.

To celebrate Chautauqua’s 125th anniversary in 2023, a new cookbook is being planned by Enola’s daughter and granddaughter.
