CHAUTAUQUA HISTORY

The Ranch House, Cottage number 200

Built in 1882, Cottage number 200, Batchelder Ranch House, also known as the Superintendent’s House and the Keeper’s Dwelling, is the oldest surviving cottage at Chautauqua.

During the first season of the Colorado Chautauqua, it served as the office, mail room and reception center. From 1923 through 1945, it was occupied by Lura and John S. Mills, City of Boulder parks director and director of buildings and grounds for Chautauqua. They kept a work horse and two cows; Chautauqua children from the city loved to watch John milk the cows.

In 1946, the house was largely demolished and a new house built on the old stone foundations. The house remained a perk for the Boulder superintendent of parks until 1949.

In 1993, the Colorado Chautauqua Association (CCA) purchased the house and by 2013, the CCA Archives were moved there. And in January of 2018, Cottage 200 became the new Chautauqua Box Office. You can stop by and purchase tickets Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
