HIKING PLAYS

The Oddest Sea: Greek Gods & Giggles – June 3 – July 30

Odysseus learns the hard way that one shouldn’t anger Poseidon. Ten years after the fall of Troy, our hero is still unable to make it home where, unbeknownst to him, his wife is being courted by 108 suitors! Set sail up the trail with us and encounter gods and goddesses, a cyclops, a whirlpool, a sea-witch, and more in this humorous adaptation of the Greek classic that would please Zeus himself.

Buy early! Each hike is capped at low numbers and tends to sell out in advance. Recommended for all ages. Presented by Arts in the Open. Show length: 2 hours. June 3 – July 30. Chautauqua Picnic Shelter. Buy tickets online.

CHAUTAUQUA HISTORY

The Boulder Electric Street Car Railway

During Chautauqua’s first year, the lack of adequate transportation became a concern. Some teachers were walking up hill over a mile from the train station in their long dark skirts in the summer heat. Organizers knew they needed to develop a plan for the second season to quell complaints and ensure the continued success of Chautauqua transit. In June 1899, an electric street car connected Chautauqua to the Boulder train station. Everyone celebrated the Boulder Electric Street Railway and the cool and comfortable ride to the chautauqua. Cars ran every 15 minutes from the depot for a five cent fare.
