SILENT FILM

Beauty and the Beast – June 29

Featuring the 1995 Philip Glass opera soundtrack with English subtitles

Jean Cocteau’s adaptation of de Beaumont’s fairy-tale of the gentle-hearted beast in love with a simple and beautiful girl is a visual delight that can be appreciated by all ages. Inspired by the beauty of this 1946 film, Philip Glass wrote an opera score to accompany it. Glass’ 1995 opera soundtrack will be played during tonight’s special screening. Watch a preview here. Wednesday, June 29. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Auditorium. Buy tickets online.

The Cameraman – July 6

Starring Buster Keaton with Hank Troy, piano

In this 1928 comedy classic, photographer Buster (Buster Keaton) becomes smitten with Sally (Marceline Day), secretary for the newsreel department at MGM. Trying to win her attention, Buster abandons photography in order to become a news cameraman. In spite of failures with his motion camera, Sally takes to him as well. However, veteran cameraman Stagg (Harold Goodwin) also fancies Sally, meaning Buster will need to learn how to film quickly before he loses his job. Watch an unforgettable scene from the film here. Also screened will be the short film “The Cook” (1918) starring Buster Keaton & Fatty Arbuckle. Wednesday, July 6. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Auditorium. Buy tickets online.
