SILENT FILM

Bardelys the Magnificent (1926) – June 22

Featuring live musical accompaniment by The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra

Bring the entire family and join us for tonight’s swashbuckling romance starring John Gilbert, Eleanor Broadman and then 19 year-old John Wayne. This film was considered lost with only its trailer surviving until rediscovered in 2006. According to Robert Osborne of Turner Classic Movies, MGM originally signed a ten year contract with author Rafael Sabatini for the rights to his novel. In 1936, MGM chose not to renew and destroyed the negative and all known prints. Seventy years later, a nearly complete print of the film was found in France, restored and made available to the U.S. in 2008. Wednesday, June 22. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Auditorium. Buy tickets online.

Beauty and the Beast (1946) – June 29

Featuring the 1995 Philip Glass opera soundtrack with English subtitles

Before the Disney cartoon, Jean Cocteau brought us this “tale as old as time” in his 1946 version of “Beauty and the Beast.” Film critics and historians hail Cocteau’s film as one of the most beautiful fairy tale films made. Many critics further point out that the living furniture in Disney’s version was inspired by Cocteau’s film, as was the character design for the Beast. In 1995, Philip Glass created an operatic version of the 1946 film, using the script as its libretto. Glass’ work was originally performed while the Cocteau film screened in the background and is the soundtrack for this special screening. Wednesday, June 29. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Auditorium. CITY OF BOULDER PROJECTS AT CHAUTAUQUA

Chautauqua Pedestrian Improvements Project Open House – June 28

Join staff from the City of Boulder to learn more about the safety, access and lighting improvements planned for Baseline Road and Chautauqua. Over the past year, the public and several board and commissions have offered input on preliminary project plans. Staff developed the final plan of improvements using this feedback, where feasible. This is the community’s chance to see the final project plan. Project improvements include a new sidewalk along the south side of Baseline Road, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant pedestrian crossings, pedestrian connections from Baseline Road into Chautauqua and transit stop improvements. Construction is expected to start this fall and be completed next spring.

The open house is Tuesday, June 28 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the northwest corner of Chautauqua Park. Attendees are encouraged to walk, bike or carpool to the open house.

This project is funded by the 2014 voter approved Community, Culture and Safety tax. For further information, please visit https://bouldercolorado.gov/pages/chautauqua-pedestrian-safety-access-and-lighting.
