CHAUTAUQUA HISTORY

Houston Cottage

The Colorado Chautauqua (b. 1898) was originally created to “conduct a summer normal school and general lecture course” where Texas teachers could upgrade their skills in the salubrious climate and spectacular setting of Boulder.

In 1901, needing additional lodging space and hoping to attract annually returning visitors, the then Texas-Colorado Chautauqua Association advertised for out-of-state “owner-builders” to construct cottages at Chautauqua. A contest for the best cottage offered a prize of $150, free admission for a year, and free rent for eighteen years. Houston Teachers Association Cottage won.

To this day, the Houston Teachers Cottage is owned by descendants of the Houston Teachers Association. Each year they hold a lottery to determine who gets to use the cottage. Its original architectural details are unchanged.
