SILENT FILM

The General – June 1

Join us tonight as the 31st Silent Film Series at Chautauqua kicks off with the hilarious classic “The General” starring Buster Keaton.

Inspired by a real-life locomotive chase during the American Civil War, this action-adventure-comedy finds Southern railroad engineer Johnnie Gray (Buster Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers. When Gray’s beloved locomotive and fiancée are stolen by Union soldiers, he pursues them single-handedly behind enemy lines. In true Buster Keaton fashion, various modes of transportation are his stunt props highlighting his boundless wit and dexterity. Also screened will be the short film “The Goat” (1921) starring Buster Keaton.

Featuring live musical accompaniment by Hank Troy, piano. Wednesday, June 1. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Auditorium. Buy tickets online.

Show People – June 7

In this comedy, Peggy Pepper (Marion Davies) dreams of becoming a Hollywood movie star. So she can begin her career, she persuades her father (Dell Henderson) to drive her across the country from Georgia to Hollywood. After a rough start, Pepper meets Billy Boone who gives her a chance on his set, if she shows up. Peggy goes, gets sprayed with seltzer water at her first entrance, and is dismayed to find she is acting in a cheap slapstick comedy. Pepper quickly becomes a star, leaving behind Boone, who is falling for her. As her Hollywood stardom grows, will she choose fame or love? Directed by King Vidor and featuring special cameo appearances by Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, William S. Hart and John Gilbert.

Featuring live musical accompaniment by Hank Troy, piano. Tuesday, June 7. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Auditorium. Buy tickets online.

COMEDY

Paula Poundstone – June 11

32 years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country – stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. Since then, she has become one of the country’s foremost humorists and a regular panelist on NPR’s weekly news quiz show, “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me.” Never one to stereotype herself as a “female comedian” or limit herself to comedy from a “female” point of view, Paula can “regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy”- Bob Zany, Boston Globe. Saturday, June 11. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Auditorium. Ride the FREE HOP 2 Chautauqua to this show. Buy tickets online.
