SILENT FILM

People on Sunday – July 22

Tonight be captured by the genius of the 1930 silent film “People on Sunday” with live accompaniment by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra. Notable not only for its portrayal of daily life in Berlin shortly before Adolf Hitler became Chancellor, but “People on Sunday” (“Menschen am Sonntag”) also stamps the early work of future Hollywood writer and director Billy Wilder. The film is an effervescent, sunlit silent about a handful of city dwellers enjoying a weekend outing. It is a unique hybrid of documentary (the actors were amateurs whose day jobs were those that they portrayed in the film) and fictional storytelling, and the lightly scripted work became a surprise hit. Westword describes the film and composer Rodney Sauer as bringing “a taste of that lost time, when movie-going was a splendid, multimedia event.” Also featured: the Charley Chase short, “Mama Behave.” Wednesday, July 22. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Auditorium. Buy tickets online.

Beyond Fairy Tales: Bluebeard’s Castle and The Firebird – July 23 and July 24

CMF is proud to present internationally renowned opera star Samuel Ramey with Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni and the CMF Orchestra to perform one of Samuel Ramey’s signature roles – Duke Bluebeard in Bartók’s profound and dramatic opera, Bluebeard’s Castle. Described by the New York Times as “astonishing,” this hour-long work weaves together themes of love, seduction, deception, and murder.

Ramey is joined by celebrated Canadian-Hungarian soprano Krisztina Szabo, singing the role of Judith. The stage for Bluebeard’s Castle is set with the program’s first work, Stravinsky’s suite from The Firebird. Thursday, July 23 and Friday, July 24. 7:30pm. Chautauqua Auditorium. Buy tickets online.

Sounds of the Mediterranean – July 26

Explore the sounds of the Mediterranean as Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni conducts an evening of spellbinding Spanish and Italian compositions. The evening begins in Spain with works by Benet Casablancas and Joaquin Rodrigo, including the latter’s exquisite Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra featuring Croatian guitar virtuoso, Ana Vidovic. The second half of the evening will transport you to Italy, with Vidovic returning to the stage for Vivaldi’s Guitar Concerto in D Major. Your travels for the evening conclude with Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, “Italian,” inspired by the composer’s visits to Rome. Sunday, July 26. 7:30pm. Chautauqua Auditorium.
