AUTHORS

Lost Girls of South Sudan: Lost Girl Found – January 13

For decades, the civil war of South Sudan has left thousands of children orphaned. Boys are kept together in camps, while girls are sent to surviving family members or adopted. In 1999, 4,000 of the Sudanese orphans were eligible for relocation to America – of those only 89 were girls.

“Lost Girl Found “explains why few girls made it to the United States -some to the Boulder / Denver area. Join authors Leah Bassoff and Laura M. Deluca to learn about the girls’ escape from violence, the traditions and struggles in Southern Sudan and updates on the Colorado based girls today. Listen to Leah Bassoff discuss the book in an interview with CPR here. Wednesday, January 13. 7:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

Maura Weiler: Contrition, From Page to Screen – January 19

“Contrition” is an inspiring story about twin sisters separated at birth and reconnected through art, faith and a father who touched the world through his paintings. Will their cultural differences keep them apart or will they remain side-by-side as sisters?

As a screenwriter and former film executive developing screenplays for such films as “Speed,” “Twister” and “Minority Report,” Maura Weiler can’t read or write without asking herself “would this make a good movie?” Hear about Hollywood’s current preference of books for screenplays and how the process is unfolding for Weiler’s best-selling debut novel, “Contrition.” Tuesday, January 19. 7:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.
