MUSIC

David Amram’s America – February 8

Join us for a very special evening of music and storytelling with musician, composer, conductor and singer, David Amram.

David will tell stories of his diverse life, his work in Hollywood and on Broadway as a film and theater composer, and his interactions with Leonard Bernstein, Jack Kerouac, Dizzy Gillespie and Woody Guthrie – whose family commissioned David to write the symphonic CD “This Land: Symphonic Variations on a Song by Woody Guthrie,” set for release this February, which David will also discuss. David composed and conducted this work with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at Boettcher Concert Hall, and the release coincides with the 75th anniversary of Woody writing “This Land Is Your Land.”

Also, the 30 minute landmark beat film “Pull My Daisy,” narrated by Jack Kerouac, for which David wrote the film score and also co-starred with Allen Ginsberg, will be shown. David will host a Q&A session after the screening. Sunday, February 8. 8:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

AUTHORS

Marc Bekoff: Rewilding Our Hearts – February 10

A professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at CU Boulder, Marc Bekoff’s areas of research focus on animal behavior, animal cognitive ethology (the study of animal minds) and compassionate conservation.

Marc is a fellow of the Animal Behavior Society, which awarded him the Exemplar Award in 2000 for his major long-term contributions to the field of animal behavior, and has worked with Jane Goodall, acting as an ambassador for Jane’s Roots & Shoots program. He also co-founded the Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals: Citizens for Responsible Animal Behavior Studies program with Jane in 2000.

Marc will discuss the concept of “rewilding,” or to make wild once again, referring to the creation of corridors between preserved lands that allow declining populations to rebound. He applies this concept to human attitudes in his latest work “Rewilding Our Hearts,” arguing that unless humans “rewild” themselves, becoming reconnected to nature and fundamentally shift their consciousness, conversation efforts will have but limited impact. Tuesday, February 10. 7:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

This phase of the West Garden Walk project is expected to be completed within approximately three weeks (by February 6), weather permitting. The second phase of the project will be the installation of the ADA-compliant West Garden Walk sidewalk and associated landscaping. Estimated completion, weather dependent, is expected in spring 2015.
