AUTHORS

Mark Sundeen: The Unsettlers – January 25

Mark Sundeen, author of the best-selling book “The Man Who Quit Money,” will share his January 10 release, “The Unsettlers.” A work of immersive journalism steeped in a distinctively American social history and sparked by a personal quest, “The Unsettlers” traces the radical search for the simple life through the lives of three very different couples. Captivating and clear-eyed, it dares us to imagine what a sustainable, ethical, authentic future might actually look like. Hear Sundeen’s interview on the new pioneers with Outside Magazine here. CHAUTAUQUA HISTORY

Quarry above Chautauqua once provided stone for Boulder and beyond

The Bergheim-Wood Quarry, located above Chautauqua in Bluebell Canyon, provided stone materials for a number of homes and buildings in Boulder and beyond. Historians say that the lower portion of the Chautauqua Arbor (b. 1908), was constructed with rock from the quarry as well.

Jonas Bergheim arrived in Boulder in 1878 and became proprietor of a men’s clothing store on Pearl Street. The business, located where Patagonia is today, was known as J. Bergheim and Company, and later Bergheim & Son. Jonas Bergheim served on the Colorado Chautauqua Association board as treasurer for twenty five years, according to his obituary.

Frank Wood was in the lumber business and he and Bergheim became partners in the quarry. The Bergheim Quarry, also known as Bergheim-Wood Quarry, was sold to the City of Boulder in 1920 for $5,800 to become part of Boulder Mountain Parks. Trail markers now say Woods Quarry, when in fact, the quarry was named for Bergheim and Wood.

Early Chautauquans loved to hike to the quarry. Today, hikes to the abandoned quarry begin about 0.4 miles up the Mesa Trail.

CITY PROJECTS AT CHAUTAUQUA

Baseline Sidewalk Project Update

The new sidewalk on the south side of Baseline Road from west of 6th to 8th Street is completed and open for walking. Parking along the south side of Baseline from west of 6th to 8th Street has re-opened. Sidewalk construction from 8th to Kinnikinic Road will be completed in February when the pedestrian safety improvements along Kinnikinic and its intersection with Baseline will occur.

Until then, a detour will route pedestrians to the north side of Baseline Road at 8th Street and west to Kinnikinic to access Chautauqua Park and Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) trails.

You may have noticed new stairs to the Chautauqua Meadow (managed by OSMP).  Though construction of the stairs is complete, OSMP is working to connect these to designated access trails within the meadow. To preserve and protect the meadow, please do not use the stairs, cross the temporary fencing or cut through the meadow until this work is completed.

All work is dependent on weather, contractor schedules and material delivery and so is subject to change.  For the latest construction and traffic impact information, visit www.BoulderConeZones.net and follow @boulderconezones on Twitter.  For more information, visit the City of Boulder’s project page here.
