TALKS

The Legacy of Penfield Tate, II – February 9

In January of 1974, Boulder city council selected Penfield Tate, II, as its first African American mayor. A humanitarian ahead of his time, Tate introduced the Human Rights Ordinance Amendment, prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. Passed on the first reading by city council in December 1973, the measure infuriated many Boulder citizens who lashed out on Tate and his family. According to the Daily Camera, Tate defended his position and wrote, “I believe that the most basic right this country offers is the right for its citizens to enjoy ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’” What can we learn from Tate’s commitment to his convictions? Join the honorable Penfield Tate, III, son of the late mayor, for a revealing look back to the life and times of Boulder’s humanitarian mayor. Thursday, February 9. 7:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

EXPLORERS

Chris Fisher: City of the Jaguar – February 16

In 2012, a team of archaeologists, including Dr. Chris Fisher, boarded a single-engine plane in search of an ancient city deep in the jungles of Honduras. A 500-year-old legend warned that anyone who entered the lost city would fall ill and die. On their journey, Fisher and the team faced torrential rains, disease-carrying insects, snakes and jaguars. While Fisher escaped unscathed, some members did contract a sometimes lethal- and incurable-disease.

In February 2015, the team entered the ruins in the remote region known as La Mosquitia and have uncovered and removed more than 200 sculptures from the center of the site. They call it the “City of the Jaguar.” Watch a recent “CBS Sunday Morning” episode about the quest here. Thursday, February 16. 7:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

AUTHORS

Erika Krouse: Contenders – February 22

In Erika Krouse’s best-selling novel “Contenders,” Nina Black is a happy thief and street fighter until one of her marks, a Denver cop and MMA comeback contender, wants his wallet—and his dignity—back. Avoiding retribution is difficult enough alone, but becomes impossible once Nina receives unexpected custody of an orphaned eight-year-old niece she did not know existed. Listen to Colorado Public Radio’s interview with Erika Krouse here. Krouse will read from “Contenders” and discuss the challenges of writing characters who veer from the norm. CITY PROJECTS AT CHAUTAUQUA

Baseline Sidewalk Project Update

Due to the temporary closure of the King’s Gate entrance to Chautauqua, a detour has been provided on the north side of Baseline Road to Kinnikinic Road.

For your safety and that of the construction crews, and to ensure that work can be completed on time, please observe the detours and do not enter the work zone–marked by cones, barrels, barricades and fencing. It may seem safe to hop the fence or go inside the cones and barrels, but the machine operators aren’t expecting you in their work area and may not be able to stop in time to keep you safe. Also, there are many other safety hazards that may not be clear, like holes to fall in, exposed utilities or unstable ground and slippery surfaces.

If you have questions regarding the detour, please contact Melanie Sloan, Transportation Division, at 303-441-4934 or by email at sloanm@bouldercolorado.gov.

All work is dependent on weather, contractor schedules and material delivery and so is subject to change. For the latest construction and traffic impact information, visit www.BoulderConeZones.net and follow @boulderconezones on Twitter. For more information, visit the City of Boulder’s project page here.
