As March rolls in, we are excited to share this month’s lineup of distinguished speakers and artists coming to the Chautauqua Community House. In our explorer series, hear from two world travelers, whose journeys have taken them through the Appalachians and into remote canyons, to the peninsula of the Antarctic and the coast of the Caspian Sea in Russia. For our film series, “Pioneers” will be screened to honor the extraordinary achievements of American women. Folk musical group Dana Louise & The Glorious Birds will light up the stage with their melodic and vibrant sound, while New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Swanson closes out the month with a discussion of her newest novel, “The Glass Forest.” With countless topics this month, there is something for everyone to enjoy! CHAUTAUQUA HISTORY

Chautauqua Kindergarten/Montessori

At the end of the 19th century, training for teachers was becoming standardized. Education was beginning to be seen as a science, and the Chautauqua movement took the lead in continuing education for teachers. From its inception in 1898, the Colorado Chautauqua offered kindergarten classes and trained primary school teachers to teach them. Kindergarten activities included mountain tramps, games, burro rides, arts and crafts, pageants and story hours.

In 1912, following the death of Chautauqua photographer “Rocky Mountain” Joe Sturtevant, his Woodbine Studio was remodeled to house a Montessori School, almost certainly the first in the state. The May 1913 Chautauqua Bulletin announced that the school, for children aged 2 through 6years, would be directed by Miss Victoria Hazlitt of the University of Colorado School of Education. The “most modern thing in primary education,” would give the children “training along the most modern and scientific lines … developing the natural and desirable traits of child character.”

The school operated for only three years. In 1916 the building was razed and construction of the Community House began on the site.
