EXPLORERS

Luke Kimmes: Rediscovering North America – January 10

The Rediscovering North America expedition was roughly 5,300 miles, paddled by canoe from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean. The six-man expedition took a total of 245 days to complete. Starting January 2nd, 2015, Luke Kimmes and five others left the Gulf of Mexico — paddling against the current up the Mississippi River, through winter conditions for the next 85 days. Seventeen resupplies later, a destination was reached: the Arctic Ocean, and the small town of Kugluktuk in the Nunavut Territory. All for the sake of adventure.

Join Luke Kimmes, certified wilderness first responder and American Mountain Guide Association single pitch instructor, as he leads a discussion on his incredible journey, named the 2016 “Expedition of the Year” at the Canoe and Kayak Awards. Catch a sneak-peak here. Thursday, January 10. 7:00 PM Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

MUSIC

The River Arkansas – January 12

The River Arkansas is a band made up of some of the finest musicians on the Colorado front range. Preparing to release their third studio album, “Any Kind of Weather,” the band has hit their stride, traveling the midwest, south and western United States as well as playing festivals across Colorado.  Fronted by Mike Clark, the band delivers a mixture of heartfelt country, blues, folk and Americana, inspired by the Arkansas River. “The sound of this band is absolutely at home at any mountain festival, but don’t assume it to be another one‐trick folk pony. No way. This’ll play in the city,” says Stubborn Sounds.  Preparing to release their third studio album, “Any Kind of Weather,” the band has hit their stride, traveling the midwest, south and western United States as well as playing festivals across Colorado. Watch River Arkansas here. Saturday, January 12. 7:30 PM Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

HISTORY

Gulf & Southern Railway

The Colorado Chautauqua would not exist but for the Gulf & Southern Railway. In 1897, the Texas Board of Regents was looking for a partner to transport Texas teachers to a not yet established summer school, or Chautauqua, in cool Colorado. Denver, Colorado Springs and Boulder vied for the Chautauqua. In February 1898, the chairman of the Board of Regents, the president of the University of Texas and the railway officials visited Colorado and chose Boulder (75 passenger miles farther north than Colorado Springs).

Gulf & Southern involvement did not end there. Their railroad agent Eli Hirshfield chose the actual site, the Batchelder Ranch west of Boulder, and served as Chautauqua manager for the first two years. The railway published the monthly Chautauquan to advertise the Chautauqua and offered a special $75.00 package covering roundtrip fare from Ft. Worth, room and board, tuition and admission to all events for the six-week session.
