TODAY is Colorado Gives Day

Please join Coloradans across the state TODAY- Colorado Gives Day – in supporting the Colorado Chautauqua Association (CCA) and all your favorite Colorado nonprofits.
Presented by Community First Foundation and FirstBank, Colorado Gives Day takes place online today, December 9, for 24 hours. By giving TODAY through Colorado Gives Day, all donations will be increased through an Incentive Fund.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, CCA relies on your generosity to help implement projects and programs that enrich our community. Your gift allows us to constantly improve the visitor experience of the Colorado Chautauqua’s historic accommodations and event venues, the natural beauty of the 26 acres of grounds, and the quality and quantity of educational and entertainment programming. On average, the association spends one million dollars annually on routine upkeep, preservation and capital projects.

Gifts of any size make a difference. We hope you will contribute an amount that makes you feel good about supporting the important work we are doing and the place and experience you value.

Thank you for your consideration and support!

How Children’s Interests Develop – December 10

Interest and learning go hand in hand. When children and adolescents are deeply interested in a topic, they actively seek out ways to learn more about it. In turn, their growing knowledge helps deepen their interest. CU Professor Bill Penuel will describe what research reveals about how children’s interests develop in and out of school and the role that social supports play in helping young people find activities that captivate and sustain their attention over time. Penuel will discuss ways that parents, teachers and the community can support the cycle in which interest and understanding can grow together, with emphasis on the middle grades and adolescence — when interest in many school subjects tends to decline. Wednesday, December 10. 7:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

New Horizons to the Pluto System – December 15

Take a break from the hectic holiday pace and journey with us to Pluto for a look at NASA’s New Horizon  mission. The mission’s purpose is to explore the Pluto system and the frontier of our solar system including the Kuiper Belt. The spacecraft, launched January 19, 2006, just came online last week and will begin its encounter studies of Pluto in early 2015, culminating on July 14, 2015 with a close approach just 12,500 km from Pluto.
Dr. S. Alan Stern will describe the history of this mission, the science behind it, the capabilities of the spacecraft and payload, the plans for our encounter with planet Pluto and briefly outline the extended mission NASA hopes to fly across the Kuiper Belt.

Dr. Stern is a planetary scientist, space program executive, aerospace consultant and author. In 2007, he was named to the Time 100 and was appointed NASA’s chief of all science missions. Dr. Stern is the Principal Investigator (PI) of NASA’s $727M New Horizon’s mission to reconnoiter Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. He is also the PI of two instruments aboard New Horizons, the Alice UV Spectrometer and the Ralph Visible Imager/IR Spectrometer.
Since 2009, he has been an Associate Vice President at the Southwest Research Institute. Additionally, from 2008-2012 he served on the board of directors of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, and from 2011-2013 he served as the Director of the Florida Space Institute. Dr. Stern also served as the Chief Scientist and Mission Architect for the Moon Express Google Lunar X-Prize Team from 2010-2013.
