MUSIC

Just as attending a concert in the Chautauqua Auditorium is on the summer “must-do” list, Community House concerts are a favorite amongst audiences looking to experience music in an intimate atmosphere. With shows booked through April, we hope you will join us to experience a special performance in one of the Front Range’s premier listening rooms. Here’s a list of what’s coming up:

• Jan 9: Blackbird & the Storm: The Audubon Tour
• Feb 8: David Amram’s America – JUST ADDED!
• Feb 27: Jake Schepps Quintet featuring Matt Flinner
• Mar 14: Stella Luce
• Apr 10: Aspen Hourglass – JUST ADDED!
• Apr 24: The Mulligan Brothers

Beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages and light snacks served at all Community House concerts.

Blackbird & The Storm

Blackbird and the Storm have teamed up with the local Audubon Society to create a special musical tour celebrating birdsong! Field recordings of birdsong and other natural sounds loop throughout the music to create a truly original soundscape. To celebrate the Audubon Tour, Blackbird and the Storm will also curate a collection of songs about birds, written by various artists. Friday, January 9. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

David Amram’s America

Beat poet, composer, multi-instrumentalist, author and all around genius, David Amram, will present a very special and eclectic evening of music, readings and narration from iconic beat works “Splendor in the Grass,” “Pull My Daisy” and “On The Road.” David will also discuss his most recent project with the Colorado Symphony—the recording and release of the symphony’s album, “This Land: Symphonic Variations on a Song by Woody Guthrie.” Before you join us for this special evening, listen to David’s interview with Colorado Public Radio on the release of this album. Sunday, February 8. 8:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

Jake Schepps Quintet featuring Matt Flinner

The stringband instrumentation of banjo, mandolin, guitar, violin and bass is rewired, rebooted and re-contextualized by the Jake Schepps Quintet on their new album “Entwined.” The album features newly commissioned long-form works by composers hailing from the contemporary classical world and mandolinist-composer Matt Flinner helping to bridge the genre gap with a monumental new four-movement work rooted in the worldly new acoustic aesthetic. Friday, February 27. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

Stella Luce

Join us for an acoustic evening of music blending indie-rock, ethnic strings and electronic experimentation with Fort Collins-based Stella Luce. The band has performed at the acclaimed SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas, and most recently opened for DeVotchKa to rave reviews. Saturday, March 14. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

Aspen Hourglass

Aspen Hourglass is an exciting new alternative Front Range band receiving rave reviews and developing a huge fan base. The band began casually in February 2012 inside a garage playing music for fun and in just a few short years, the group has opened for many national acts, including The Flobots, Passafire, Matthew Santos, This Must be the Band and Darling Parade. Click here for a preview of Aspen Hourglass and be sure to join us for an evening of exciting new music in a small, intimate atmosphere before the band skyrockets to stardom and subsequent large venue shows.  Friday, April 10. 8:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

The Mulligan Brothers

The Mulligan Brothers is Ross Newell on lead vocals and guitar, Gram Rea on vocals, fiddle, mandolin and harmonica, Greg DeLuca on drums and Ben Leininger on upright suitcase bass. Their name represents a second chance for the four musicians who finally found the combination that is right for them. Join us for an incredible night of music crossing the border between folk rock, Americana and alternate country as the Mulligan Brothers debut their second album “Via Portland.” Friday, April 24. 7:30 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.

AUTHORS

Peter Heller: The Painter – January 14

Following up on the success of “The Dog Stars,” his post-apocalyptic literary debut of 2012, Peter Heller now pivots in a slightly different direction with “The Painter” — a contemporary Western about a 45-year-old artist and fly fisherman named Jim Stegner. Having lost two wives to divorce and his only daughter to violence, Stegner has felt the sting of life; but he’s also capable of experiencing great beauty, whether through his art, his relationships, or while out casting on a river. Wednesday, January 14. 7:00 PM. Chautauqua Community House. Buy tickets online.
