David Grisman Sextet – August 12David Grisman is a bluegrass mandolinist and acoustic composer with a long history of expanding the genre’s musical boundaries to include jazz and world music. Beginning his musical career in 1963 as a member of The Even Dozen Jug Band, Grisman was affectionately nicknamed, “Dawg” by Jerry Garcia, with his mixture of bluegrass and Django Reinhardt-Stéphane Grappelli-influenced jazz: later becoming known as “Dawg Music.” These early fusions with Reinhardt-era jazz began the formation of the genre known today as newgrass. Playing original “Dawg” compositions, the sextet includes Jim Kerwin (bass), Matt Eakle (flute and bass flute), George Marsh (drums and percussion), Chad Manning (violin, viola and mandolin) and George Cole (guitar).
