CHAUTAUQUA HISTORY
Missionaries at Chautauqua
Boulder’s Chautauqua was nondenominational from the start. There were plenty of religious offerings, but all creeds were welcome and speakers from many denominations presented programs. A group of missionary women formed the School of Missions in 1907 as a lecture series, and it quickly became popular. Missions House was constructed by the Chautauqua Association in 1911 to accommodate the increasing number of students. Designed in the Craftsman architecture, the lodge reflects an architecture trend that was popular across the country. The School of Missions moved to Estes Park in 1956, leaving the lodge open to accommodate Chautauqua quests. Today, Missions House is a popular venue for meetings, weddings and private events.
