HISTORY

Chautauqua Hostesses

From the Chautauqua’s opening in 1898, Chautauqua hostesses welcomed guests, coordinated adult programming and social events and chaperoned single women. Three hostesses served for many years.

Theresa Winn, a schoolteacher from Dallas, served from 1903 to 1927, at a starting salary of $100 for the season. Beginning in 1919, she coordinated “auto caravans” to Estes Park, Eldorado Springs, Central City and Elitch’s Gardens in Denver.

In 1935 Alice Jones was hired as hostess — “an arbitrator and sympathizer and a friend to all,” (Mary Galey, The Grand Assembly) at a starting salary of $13 per week. She programmed lectures, book reviews, travelogues, art exhibits, hobby shows, and music until she retired in 1950.

The last long-time hostess was Bertelle (Bertie) Howells, a music teacher in the Boulder schools, who served from 1953 through 1974. She increased the musical programming at Community House.
