HISTORY

Rocky Mountain School of Missions

From 1906-1955, the Rocky Mountain School of Missions held a week-long series of lectures and study at Chautauqua for young women training to go into the mission field. Due to its overwhelming success, the school built the Missions House for classroom space and lodging, but that still couldn’t meet the demand for lodging.

In 1913, the Rocky Mountain School of Missions built the Young Woman’s Camp directly west of the Missions House on Primrose Road. Built on stone foundation, the 37’ x 42’ building boasted electric lights, a large screened-in front porch, a bathroom and a kitchen in the basement.

By 1950, it was converted into a triplex for CU student winter rentals and renamed Primrose Apartments. Since the late 1990’s, it has housed the Chautauqua preservation and housekeeping office.
