SUMMARY:Tree Tour With Jeff Rump
DESCRIPTION:Did you know Chautauqua has varieties of over 500 trees? Chautauqua’s enchantment lies in its setting\, but the early settlers did little to cultivate the trees. Only the hardy native vegetation could withstand the summer heat and winter snow. By comparison\, today’s Chautauqua hosts an abundant urban forest. Join tree expert Jeff Rump as he guides you through the flowering oasis of native and imported species that have been introduced in the past 120 years. Chautauqua has everything from Eastern White Pines to Kentucky Coffee Trees to Buckeyes\, in addition to the familiar Ashes\, Oaks\, Elms\, and Ponderosa Pines. Attend this complimentary one-hour tour to learn about the trees of Chautauqua and their history. \nThis is a free event\, but registration is required. Click “Get Tickets” to register.

Featuring multiple speakers from SWRI\, NIST\, and Ball Aerospace\, interactive exhibits\, and engaging activities. This family-friendly event will take you on a journey through the cosmos and beyond. Learn about the latest advancements in space exploration\, discover new galaxies and stars\, and explore the mysteries of the universe. Bring your questions for our expert panelists\, and engage in hands-on activities that will inspire and educate. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to explore the cosmos with your family and friends. \nAbout the Speakers & Topics:\nDr. Phil Plait – 5:15 PM\n\nUnder Alien Skies\nWhat would it be like to sail above Saturn’s rings\, or watch an eclipse from the Moon\, or stare in awe as sunset brings a million brilliant stars to the sky of a planet in a star cluster? Astronomer and renowned science communicator Dr. Phil Plait will show you\, based on his book\, “Under Alien Skies: A Sightseer’s Guide to the Universe”. More than just a simple description of events\, this talk will take you to these distant worlds — so you can feel what it would be like to be there\, and experience them for yourself. \nFor as long as he can remember\, Phil Plait has been in love with science: “When I was maybe four or five years old\, my dad brought home a cheapo department store telescope. He aimed it at Saturn that night. One look\, and that was it. I was hooked\,” he says. \nAfter earning his doctorate in astronomy at the University of Virginia\, he worked on the Hubble Space Telescope as a NASA contractor at the Goddard Space Flight Center. He began a career in public outreach and education with the Bad Astronomy website and blog\, debunking bad science and popular misconceptions. The book Bad Astronomy was released in 2002\, followed in 2008 by Death From The Skies! He can most recently be seen in “Crash Course Astronomy”\, a 46-part educational web series he wrote and hosted that has over 20 million views. He hosted the TV show “Phil Plait’s Bad Universe” on the Discovery Channel in 2010 and was the head science writer for “Bill Nye Saves the World” on Netflix\, due out in 2017. Dr. Plait’s blog has been hosted by Discover Magazine and Slate\, and is now on Syfy Wire. \nDr. Plait has given talks about science and pseudoscience across the US and internationally. He uses images\, audio\, and video clips in entertaining and informative multimedia presentations packed with humor and backed by solid science. He has spoken at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center\, NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center\, the Space Telescope Science Institute (home of Hubble)\, the Hayden Planetarium in NYC and many other world- class museums and planetaria\, conferences\, astronomy clubs\, colleges & universities\, and community groups. He has appeared on CNN\, Fox News\, MSNBC\, Pax TV\, Tech TV\, Syfy\, Radio BBC\, Air America\, NPR\, and many other television and internet venues. His writing has appeared in Discover magazine\, Sky and Telescope\, Astronomy magazine\, Night Sky magazine\, Space.com\, and more. \n   Dr. Amir Caspi                 Dr. Dan Seaton – 4:30 PM\n  \nPlanes\, Trains\, and Automobiles: How scientists chase eclipse shadows\, and you can\, too\nTotal solar eclipses are one of the most spectacular astronomical phenomena observable with the naked eye. They also provide a rare opportunity for scientists to study the Sun’s million-degree atmosphere — the solar corona — in ways and detail that are not possible at any other time. In this presentation\, we’ll describe the surprising science of the Sun and solar corona\, and its influence on us here on Earth\, and the wonder of experiencing a total solar eclipse. We’ll introduce two innovative experiments that we will run during the upcoming U.S. total solar eclipse on April 8\, 2024 and will also highlight how you\, too\, can safely observe this and future eclipses\, and even participate in research projects planned during this awesome celestial event. \nDr. Amir Caspi works as a Principal Scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder. He studies the Sun\, particularly powerful energetic processes like solar flares and eruptions and how they affect the Earth and assets in space. He is the Principal Investigator of the CubIXSS CubeSat to study solar flares through X-ray emission\, and a mission team member of multiple NASA solar space missions. Dr. Caspi led the 2017 mission to observe the total solar eclipse with NASA’s WB-57 aircraft\, and now leads the Citizen CATE 2024 and NASA WB-57 2024 total solar eclipse missions \nDr. Dan Seaton works as a Principal Scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder. He studies the Sun and its deep connection to the solar system through solar eruptions and the solar wind. He is the Project Scientist for the SunCET CubeSat to study the Sun’s extended atmosphere in extreme ultraviolet emission\, and a member of the mission teams for multiple NASA and ESA Sun-observing space missions. He has been observing solar eclipses since 1999 and serves as the Project Scientist for the Citizen CATE 2024 and NASA WB-57 total solar eclipse missions. \nMacKenzie Ferrie – 3:40 PM\n \nX-ray Eyes on the Cosmos\nSupermassive black holes\, exploding stars\, magnetars—all extreme objects producing extreme energy—in other words\, X-rays. Difficult to observe or measure\, NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer has taken on the challenge in a brand-new way. The Ball-built IXPE spacecraft carries telescopes and detectors designed to observe polarization\, or the vibration of light\, and reveal secrets about mysterious celestial objects. Hear more about this unique spacecraft with its origami boom\, designed and built with partners around the world during the height of COVID-19. \nAs Deputy Director of Ball Aerospace’s civil space programs\, MacKenzie Ferrie works with internal and external teams to ensure the successful completion of flight hardware. She has also served as program manager and manufacturing/test lead for both space science and Earth science missions\, including NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observatory\, Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 cryocooler on Landsat 9 and Operational Land Imager on Landsat 8. When she’s not busy with work teams\, she’s busy camping\, traveling\, and gardening with her home team. \nDr. Hannes Hubmayr – 3:05 PM\n\nThe Origin of the Universe\nThroughout most of human history\, different cultures made up stories to explain the beginning of life\, the earth\, and the cosmos.  We currently live in a remarkable era for cosmology\, the study of the universe on its largest scales.  We now have the tools to ask “what is the origin of the cosmos?” from a scientific perspective.  In this brief talk\, I will describe the universe’s origin story — a hot big bang with expansion faster than the speed of light — as discovered through scientific inquiry.  I will also introduce big unresolved questions in our understanding of the universe and what observations can help address them. \nDr. Johannes Hubmayr is an experimental physicist and Group Leader in the Quantum Electromagnetics Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  His Group designs and micro-fabricates custom cryogenic sensor arrays and multiplexed readout for applications in cosmology\, astrophysics\, security\, and increasingly in support of quantum information science. In one research theme\, the Group works in large scientific collaborations to build millimeter-wave cameras that make exquisite measurements of the cosmos to understand fundamental physics\, how the universe began\, how it has evolved\, and to determine the values of cosmological parameters such as the physical baryon density to high precision.  As of early 2023\, Dr. Hubmayr’s 300+ scientific publications have been cited 11\,400+ times. \n  \nClimb aboard the\n \n \nThe Mobile Earth + Space Observatory (MESO) is a mobile environmental and space science laboratory outfitted with hands-on educational and research instrumentation that support activities focused on weather\, climate\, astronomy and renewable energy. The goal for this ‘science center on wheels’ is to engage the public in scientific inquiry and allow them to experience authentic science first-hand. \nThere will not be free shuttle service for this event.

SUMMARY:The Maestas Case: One of the Court's Earliest Bans of Public School Segregation
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 5:30 \nEvent time: 6:00 \n \nThe Maestas Case is the earliest known successful struggle by Mexican-American to end school segregation in the United States. All but forgotten for over a century\, the lawsuit was filed in 1913 and took place in southern Colorado\, a region of deep historical roots for Hispanics. \nThis three part presentation will be in a panel format with Retired Judge Martín Gonzales setting the case in its unique historical context and legal background. Dr. Gonzalo Guzmán will talk about Perspectives on Pride and Persistence in Ending Public School Segregation and other examples of Latino educational segregation. Dr. Antonio Esquibel will talk about the Sociedad Protección Mutua de Trabajadores Unidos’ (SPMDTU) involvement in the case and will perform “El Corrido de Francisco Maestas”. \nA segregated school for Mexican-American Children was created with All Mexican-American children regardless of English proficiency required to attend. The plaintiffs (Mexican-Americans) argued their children were racially distinct as Mexicans and that this was prohibited under the Colorado Constitution as improper public schools segregation of children based on color and race. Defendants (school board members and the superintendent) countered that these children were Caucasian and no different from other White children in the school district. Further that the Mexican-American children were segregated to meet their linguistic needs. \nDistrict Court Judge\, Charles Holbrook\, ruled in 1914 that to the extent that many Mexican-American children were English speaking\, the segregation of English language proficient Mexican-American children was improper and they had the right to their chosen School. \n  \nDr. Gonzalo Guzmán: \nDr. Gonzalo Guzmán is from Wapato in the Yakima Valley of Washington State. He is an assistant professor of educational studies at Macalester College in Saint Paul\, Minnesota. His research focuses on the racialization and educational histories of Latina/o/x communities in the Mountain States and Pacific Northwest of the US. His work has been published in the Journal of Latinos and Education\, History of Education Quarterly\, Education’s Histories\, Critical Readings on Latinos and Education\, and Annals of Wyoming. Additionally\, his research and commentary has been featured in Colorado\, Washington\, and Wyoming NPR and PBS affiliate stations\, as well as the National Park Service. He is currently finalizing his first book manuscript tentatively titled: Education for a New Race: Making Whites and Schooling the Mexican in Greater Juan Crow. Guzmán’s research led to the rediscovery of the Maestas case. \n  \nDr. Antonio Esquibel: \nDr. Antonio Esquibel has been a member of the La Sociedad Protección Mutua de Trabajadores Unidos (SPMDTU)\, the oldest civil rights organization in the United States\, for 55 years. He is currently the Secretary of the Concilio Superior\, its governing board. The SPMDTU was founded in 1900\, 123 years ago in Antonito\, Colorado. He represents the SPMDTU on the Maestas Case Commemoration Committee. He has composed “El Corrido de Francisco Maestas”/”The Ballad of Francisco Maestas”\, which immortalizes the case. Dr. Esquibel is an Emeritus Professor of Spanish\, former Vice President of Student Affairs and former Trustee of Metropolitan State University of Denver. \n  \nJudge Martin A. Gonzales: \nJudge Gonzales is a fourth-generation resident of the San Luis Valley. He obtained his JD from the University of Colorado Law School in 1978. He engaged in an extensive private civil practice his appointment to the bench. He was the first Hispanic County Judge for Alamosa County\, Colorado.  Appointed in in 2007 He became the first Hispanic District Court Judge for the 12th Judicial District which encompasses the whole of the San Luis Valley.  His position as District Court judge makes him a successor judge to Judge Holbrook\, who issued the order in the Maestas Case. He is now retired and with the Senior Judge program for the Judicial Branch. He is the chairperson of the Maestas Case Commemoration Committee and a member of the Colorado Council on Restorative justice. \nThis program is supported with funding from the generous bequest of Betsy Hitchcock.

SUMMARY:Can Multicultural Democracies Survive?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by History Colorado and Colorado Chautauqua \nDoors: 6:30 PM \nEvent time: 7:00 PM \nFree event! Click “Get Tickets” to register and secure your spot\nDemocratic government has been an ideal for many nations – at least in theory. But the opening decades of the twentieth century have witnessed some of the fundamental principles of democratic values being tested as significant social change is met by strong opposition.  In many increasingly polarized advanced democracies\, debates about the responsibilities of government to its citizens\, the limits of individual freedom and rights\, and the role of history in national identity narratives abound. Nations that were regarded as successful examples of liberal democracies with strong social safety nets have become more factionalized as their populations become more diverse. Can multicultural democracies overcome these challenges to be just\, viable and sustainable? \n  \nAt a time when many Americans feel that our own democracy is less stable than we assumed\, there may be lessons we can learn from the failures and successes of others. Through an examination of the state of democracy in other parts of the world\, the panelists and audience for this program will discuss how we might fully realize our own “more perfect union” to face the challenges of the 21st century. \n  \nPanelists: \nJoe Jupille\, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science\, Faculty Research Associate at the Institute of Behavioral Science. \nHe teaches broadly across European\, comparative and international politics at undergraduate and graduate levels. A specialist in the European Union (EU)\, his research engages the reciprocal relations of rules and politics. \nProfessor Jupille has written Procedural Politics: Issues\, Influence and Institutional Choice in the European Union (2004)\, Institutional Choice and Global Commerce (2013\, with Walter Mattli and Duncan Snidal)\, and Theories of Institutions (2022\, with James A. Caporaso)\, all with Cambridge University Press. His next book project traces the endogenous development of EU institutions over the long run. His articles have appeared in Annual Review of Political Science\, Comparative Political Studies\, European Political Science Review\, International Organization\, and West European Politics. \n \nYogesh Chandrani\, Assistant Professor of Asian Studies and Religion\, Colorado College. \nYogesh Chandrani is Assistant Professor of Religion and Asian Studies at Colorado College. SUMMARY:Theodosia Ammons: A Celebration of a Chautauqua Legend
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 5:00 PM \nShow: 5:30 PM \n \nCelebration of a Chautauqua Legend and a Tour of Her Historic Cottage \nChautauqua’s own historic trailblazer\, Theodosia Ammons\, will be inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame this spring.  Born in 1861\, Ammons broke barriers as the first female dean at what is now Colorado State University\, president of the Colorado Equal Suffrage Association\, national leader in developing the academic field of domestic sciences\, and director of Chautauqua’s original continuing education school for teachers. \nTheodosia Ammons was the founding principal of Chautauqua’s School of Domestic Science. Domestic Science\, also known as home economics\, was a progressive field that brought science into the home\, ushered women into higher education and provided leadership opportunities in education\, government and business. In 1895\, Ammons co-founded the Colorado Agricultural College (now Colorado State University) Department of Domestic Economy. A few years later in 1898\, Ammons was picked to head up the faculty of Chautauqua’s domestic science department. In 1900\, Ammons’ expertise in all things domestic led her to design a model vacation cottage on the Chautauqua grounds. Every detail for health\, sanitation\, comfort and convenience was accounted for in the plans. Named Gwenthean Cottage\, for sisters Gwendolin\, Theodosia and Anne\, the model home remains in the family and is virtually unchanged from the original design. \nSharing the stage to celebrate Ammons’ induction will be Carol Taylor\, local historian and researcher\, and Catherine Long Gates\, Ammons’ great niece and third generation owner of Boulder’s iconic Long’s Gardens.  Carol will set the historical context for Ammons’ life by describing events of the country’s Progressive Era\, a transformational period of social activism and political reform.  Catherine will trace Ammons’ journey through that Era highlighting the adult education program Ammons pioneered at Chautauqua.  Following the program and discussion\, Catherine and her family will provide a rare opportunity for the audience to tour Gwenthean Cottage.  Designed and built by Ammons in 1899 to showcase innovations for making women’s domestic work more efficient\, the cottage has been preserved in close to its original state and truly takes the visitor back in time. \nCarol Taylor is a researcher and writer who has held positions with several local history organizations. Her history columns have appeared in the Daily Camera newspaper for over 20 years. Currently Taylor is researching the histories of four privately-owned ranches in Colorado and Wyoming. \nCatherine Long Gates is Theodosia Ammons’ great niece and third-generation owner of Boulder’s iconic Long’s Gardens\, now permanently protected for community horticultural and agricultural uses thanks to the support of the community and the Long family’s efforts.  A Colorado native\, Catherine is co-owner with her sister\, Margaret\, of Gwenthean Cottage.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua Fall Tree Tour
DESCRIPTION:Event Time: 3:00 PM\nFree\nDid you know Chautauqua has varieties of over 500 trees?

SUMMARY:Russia’s War in Ukraine: Bracing for Long-term Competition
DESCRIPTION:(A Conversation with Professor Adam Stulberg\, Georgia Tech)\nDoor Time: 6:30 PM\nShow Time: 7:00 PM \nRussia and Ukraine have been at odds since the end of the Soviet Union. Many Russians\, especially President Putin\, feel Ukraine should still be a part of their country due to a shared history and similar cultures. However\, Ukraine treasures its sovereignty and has strived to balance historical ties with Russia with closer alignment to the West.  Putin’s fateful February 2022 decision to wage war in Ukraine raises fundamental issues concerning limits to escalation\, the meaning of victory\, consequences and success of sanctions\, and prospects for transformation of global politics\, economics\, and norms.  Bring your own questions and join us for a thoughtful discussion with Professor Stulberg\, Chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech\, who will put the war in context and facilitate a conversation with the audience. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Adam N. Stulberg is Sam Nunn Professor and Chair at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on international security; global nuclear security and (non)proliferation; geopolitics of energy; Russia/Eurasian politics and security affairs; comparative approaches to statecraft; as well as inter-disciplinary courses on science\, technology\, and international security policy. His current research focuses on new approaches to strategic stability\, Russia’s cross-domain & gray-zone conflict behavior\, the changing commercial nuclear landscape and international security\, nuclear trading and trafficking networks\, as well as energy security dilemmas and statecraft. \nDr. Stulberg earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, as well as holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Columbia University\, and a B.A. in History from the University of Michigan. He served as a Political Consultant at RAND from 1987-1997\, and as a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS)\, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (1997-1998). Please check back for more information soon. The polarization of our country has increased extraordinarily since 2016\, culminating in an insurrection that would have seemed unthinkable a few years ago.  Our democracy has never appeared to be more at risk than today. \nWill these tensions lead to institutional changes that will reshape our country into something more functional?  Or will we only become further divided – potentially leading to the end of our American experiment? \nJoin Mark Earnest and Tom Romero to hear their thoughts and join in on the discussion. \nAbout the Speakers:  Mark Earnest Mark Earnest is the Mieklejohn Endowed Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medicine Campus.  Dr. Earnest earned his bachelor’s degree at Wake Forest University\, his MD from Vanderbilt and moved to Colorado for his medical residency and has been proud to call Colorado home ever since.  He and his wife Julie consider themselves naturalized Coloradans and are the proud parents of two native-born children.   In addition to his medical training\, he has a PhD in Health and Behavioral Sciences from the University of Colorado Denver and a longstanding interest in health policy and history.  He is a practicing internist and the Division Head for General Internal Medicine. SUMMARY:Fort Chambers: A Call for Boulder to Reckon with our History and Build Right Relationships with Indigenous Peoples Today
DESCRIPTION:A Free Virtual Presentation and Discussion\nThroughout our country\, people are re-assessing how we memorialize our history\, especially in regard to racial injustice and conflict. This is an immediate challenge — and opportunity — for the people of Boulder. The City’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) department is considering how to protect and develop the site of Fort Chambers\, one of the staging grounds for the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre where 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho people were killed. Right Relationship Boulder is advocating for Cheyenne and Arapaho people to determine how this history should be memorialized at the Fort Chambers OSMP site. \nMembers of Right Relationship Boulder’s Land Working Group will narrate a 20-minute slide presentation\, followed by Q&A and discussion. Please join us to learn about this largely untold chapter of our community’s history and to consider its implications for us today. \nThis is a FREE event\, but please register at the ticketing link.\n\n  \nThe Sand Creek Massacre\, a painting on elk hide by Northern Arapaho artist Eugene J. Ridgely\, Sr. (Eagle Robe)\, 1994.
