Whether you’re new to hiking or looking to refresh your skills, this hands-on outdoor program helps outdoor enthusiasts feel more confident and capable on the trail. Join Chautauqua staff to explore the 10 Essentials every hiker should carry, learn how to tread lightly with the Leave No Trace principles, and practice finding your location on a topographical map.
Along the way, we’ll share pro tips for choosing gear—like tricks to best tie your hiking boots, why trekking poles can save your knees, and what kinds of layers work best in Colorado’s changeable weather. We’ll open up a backpack full of equipment, learn how to read a topographic map, identify landforms around us, and discover how small actions can protect our open spaces.
